Abstract:
It is hard to build very narrow band electrical filters. It is even harder to build variable narrow band electrical filters. Therefore, controlling the frequency of the local oscillator and a course RF filter is much more practical. This narrow band electrical filtering is almost always required, but if you can keep those components fixed to cover the range that is important, i.e the audio range, and move the frequency of the signal this makes the system much easier to implement
